Eine kleine Überraschung ist, dass die Stadt im Herzen des Ruhrgebietes zu den 'grünsten' Städten Deutschlands gehört. Ganz gerne bezeichnet man sich auch als 'Grüne Metropole'. Eine große Fläche des Stadtgebietes besteht aus Agrarflächen, Wäldern und Wasserwegen. Dazu kommt eine ganze Reihe von Parks wie z.B. dem Westfalenpark und dem Rombergpark. Während die Ruhr südlich an der Stadt vorbeifließt geht der kleine Lauf der Emscher mitten durch die Stadt. Der Dortmunder Hafen ist übrigens der größte Kanalhafen Deutschlands.
